When you get a new iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro, the first thing you will do is move the old iPhone data to the new iPhone. But recently some iPhone users reported that they couldn't restore backups to the iPhone 12 Pro after restoring iCloud Backup, restoring iTunes Backup, and even using device-to-device migration to transfer old iPhone data directly to the new iPhone without success. How to resolve this? This guide will show you how to fix it when a backup can't be restored to iPhone 12 Pro and other iPhone models.
1. Reset iPhone content
If your new iPhone 12 Pro has setup and used for a period time, you need to reset iPhone all content, and then restore the backup to the device. Go to iPhone Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings.
2. Check the iPhone storage space
Before restoring backup to the iPhone content, please check the available storage space on the iPhone 12 Pro, make sure there is enough space to restore the backup data. Go to iPhone Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage, to view and manage the usage of iPhone storage.
3. Check the iOS compatible
You'd better use the same version of iOS on your old iPhone and new iPhone to prevent backups from being restored because the iOS software on your iPhone device is too old. Go to iPhone Settings -> General -> Software Update
If the above steps have been checked and prepared, let's solve this problem when restoring from iCloud backup and iTunes backup.
Can’t restore iCloud backup to iPhone 12 Pro
a. Check the iCloud storage space
Check to see if iCloud storage is full and unavailable. Go to iPhone Settings -> Apple ID -> iCloud -> Manage Storage, and you will view all your iCloud data from iCloud Drive and iCloud backup, and you can delete them to free up iCloud storage space.
b. Change the Wifi Network
Have a try to change to another different network with cellular data or a Wifi network. Or you can reset the iPhone network, go to iPhone Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings
Can’t restore iTunes backup to iPhone 12 Pro
a. Update iTunes to the latest version
If you’re restoring iTunes backup to the iPhone 12 Pro, make sure that you’re using the latest versions of iTunes. Otherwise the iTunes may be unable to process new versions of iOS software restoring requests.
b. Check the state of the latest iTunes backup
There are some profiles that record the status of the iPhone backup file. Go to the iTunes backup location (macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ Windows OS: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\) and find the Status.plist, it will record if the current backup is a complete or not.
An incomplete backup could not be restored to the iPhone. If so, you can use the third-party software to read and extract data from the backup. Download and install Fone Rescue application.
Run Fone Rescue, and select “Recover From iTunes Backup” tab and select an iTunes backup in the list, or click the Select button to manually choose an iTunes backup, and then click the Start Scan button to read the backup data.
When the scan is complete, select iPhone photos, contacts, messages and other application data, click the Export button or the Recover button to save.
