Have you upgraded your iPhone device to the new iOS 14? Make sure back up your iPhone before updating. It will avoid iPhone data loss during the update process. After updating to the latest iOS 14, some users reported that every time they tried to access the Messages app, the app crashed and returned to the home screen. After restarting the iPhone device, click Messages.app again to view the message content, but the list of all message conversations is empty and all messages are lost. If you are looking for a solution to this problem, this article will guide you to recover all lost iPhone text messages as follows.
1. Force Quit Messages.app
On an iPhone 8 or earlier, double-click the Home button. You'll see small previews of your recently used apps. Swipe left to find the Messages.app and swipe up on the app's preview to close it. On an iPhone X or later, or an iPad with iOS 12 or later, from the Home screen, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause slightly in the middle of the screen. Swipe left to find the Messages.app and swipe up on the app's preview to close it.
2. Restart the iPhone device
Different iPhone models need to press and hold the different button to restart, see the below image:
3. Turn on iCloud for Messages
Check if iCloud for Message has been turned off. If so, please turn it on to download messages from iCloud to the iPhone device. Go to iPhone Settings -> Apple ID -> iCloud -> Messages
4. Recover from the iPhone device
If messages still does not appear in the iPhone after trying the above methods, you need to recover the iPhone message. First of all, we can use Fone Rescue to recover from iPhone devices, which can help recover deleted or lost iPhone messages due to database corruption and manual deletion. Fone Rescue is a desktop application that you need to connect the iPhone with a computer(PC or Mac), then download and install Fone Rescue on the computer.
Run Fone Rescue, and select Recover From iOS device, and click the Start Scan button
After the scan is complete, select Contact & Messages & Call log -> Messages to view all message conversations, then select message conversations and click Export the selected messages button to save.
And click the Message Attachment to view the message media files, and select the message attachment file to export.
5. Recover from the backup
If you have an iTunes backup or iCloud backup before the iPhone message lost, you can choose to restore from the backup.
a. Restore from the iTunes backup: Connect the iPhone with the computer which contains the old iTunes backup, access the iTunes or Finder in macOS, and click the Restore Backup…, then select the old backup and follow the next prompts to complete the restore process.
b. Restore from the iCloud backup: Go to iPhone Settings -> General -> Reset, then tap Erase All Content and Settings. On the Setup -> Apps & Data screen, tap Restore from iCloud Backup, then sign in with your Apple ID. Proceed to “Choose backup,” then choose from a list of available backups in iCloud to restore.
No matter you choose to restore from iTunes or iCloud backup, the current iPhone data will be replaced by the backup. If you don't want to overwrite the current iPhone data, you can use Fone Rescue to export and restore only iPhone messages from iTunes or iCloud backup.
