Some WhatsApp users report that iPhone storage (Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage) shows 16GB WhatsApp data usage, but only 4.2 GB WhatsApp data usage in WhatsApp Settings -> Storage & Data -> Manage Storage. Why is WhatsApp data usage different between iPhone storage and WhatsApp settings? How to solve? And how to free up extra WhatsApp storage from iPhone storage space?
1. Quit WhatsApp application or Restart the iPhone device
On an iPhone X or later from the Home screen, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause slightly in the middle of the screen. On an iPhone 8 or earlier, double-click the Home button. You'll see small previews of your recently used apps. Swipe left to find the WhatsApp app and wipe up on the app's preview to close it.
Or restart your iPhone device, go to iPhone Settings -> General -> Shut down, and drag the slider to shut down. Then turn your iPhone back on.
2. Backup and free up WhatsApp data storage
Before the deletion, we’d better backup our important WhatsApp data. But if we backup all WhatsApp data now, when we restore them, WhatApp's storage will not decrease. So we choose to extract and backup WhatsApp media files, photos and other important data to the computer using WhatsApp Pocket.
a). Extract and backup important WhatsApp media file to the computer
Download and install WhatsApp Pocket application
Connect iPhone device with the computer, run WhatsApp Pocket application, and click the iPhone icon to scan. After the scan is complete, you can preview and save WhatsApp chat, WhatsApp media files, WhatsApp contacts, WhatsApp call logs.
b). Remove media files from WhatsApp application
Go to WhatsApp Settings -> Storage and Data -> Manage Storage -> select a WhatsApp chat, select WhatsApp downloaded photos, videos and more attachment, click the Remove button to delete.
c). Backup all WhatsApp data to the iCloud backup
After deleting media files from WhatsApp application, and then go to WhatsApp Settings -> Chats -> Chat Backup and tap Back Up Now. You can also enable automatic scheduled backups by clicking Auto Backup and then choosing your backup frequency.
3. Remove WhatsApp application and download it from the AppStore
Go to iPhone Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage, tap WhatsApp application, and then tap Delete App to remove WhatsApp application. Go to AppStore application, and search WhatsApp, tap download to reinstall WhatsApp.
4. Restore WhatsApp from the iCloud backup
After downloading and installing WhatsApp application from AppStore, open WhatsApp application, and setup WhatsApp with your phone number, then choose restore from iCloud option and click Restore button to process.
