Handoff makes your work easy by allowing you to shift your activity from your Mac OS X Yosemite to iOS 8 and vice versa.
For example, you are working or viewing a website on an iOS 8 device and there is Mac OS X Yosemite nearby you. Then each of them watches the other to see what you are doing and also give you the facility to shift the activity to the other device.

1. Launch the message icon on your Mac OS X Yosemite.
2. All the messages that appear on your iOS 8 device will appear on your Mac too.
3. To initiate a text message, type the phone number of the person whom you want to send message or select phone number from contacts, calendar or Safari.
4. Then type message and click on the send button.
5. When your friends send texts, you will receive notification. Click on that to read the text message.
