Many iPhone users reported that they lost contacts after upgrading to iOS 13, some of them lost some iPhone contacts, but others lost all contacts, not just the contacts on the iPhone, but iCloud contacts disappeared. iPhone contacts are very important to us, is there any way to retrieve or recover them? If you are looking for a solution, this article will point you in the direction of some help.
All iPhone contacts are stored in two places in the iPhone: iPhone device and iCloud server. Remember where they were stored before they were lost, and it will help you find them faster. If you know it doesn't matter, one of the methods below will always help you find or restore them.
1. Turn on iCloud for Contacts.
If you store all contacts on iCloud, please check if your iPhone turn off iCloud contacts. Go to iPhone Settings > Apple ID > iCloud, turn on Contacts. When you're asked if you want to Merge or Cancel, tap Merge. All iCloud contacts will appear again.
2. Restore contacts from iCloud.com
If you still can’t find them after turning on iCloud for contacts, you can visit icloud.com to restore an earlier version of your contacts to recover some that were accidentally deleted. In Settings on iCloud.com, click Restore Contacts (in the Advanced section). (Available versions are listed by the date and time they were archived.)
Scroll down to choose a right version, to the right of the version you want to restore, click Restore. Wait for iCloud complete the restore operation.
3. Restore contacts from an iTunes or iCloud backup
If you don’t use iCloud to sync your contacts, all lost contacts were stored locally on your iPhone device. Check if you have an iTunes or iCloud backup before the lost. If so, you can choose to restore all iPhone data from the backup.
Check iTunes backup on the computer ( Open iTunes -> Preferences -> Device, view the latest iTunes backup and backup date)
Check iCloud backup on iPhone (Go to iPhone settings -> Apple ID -> iCloud -> Manage Storage -> Backups , tap a backup to view the last iCloud backup date)
Tips: When you start to restore, not only iPhone contacts, but all current iPhone data will be replaced with the backup data. If you only need to recover contacts, or you are not sure if the latest backup will contain lost contacts, skip solutions a and b and go directly to solution c.
a). Restore from iTunes backup
If you check all iTunes backups above and the latest iTunes backup may contains the lost contacts. Connect your iPhone with the computer, open iTunes, click the iPhone icon to access the summary page, and click Restore Backup button. Then choose the latest iTunes backup and click Restore button to complete the backup restore.
b). Restore from iCloud backup
If the latest iCloud backup includes lost contacts, you can restore from iCloud backup. Go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings. After iPhone has erased, you will be back to the Set Up screen. Then choose to restore from iCloud backup .
c). Only restore contacts from the iTunes or iCloud backup

4. Restore contacts from iPhone device directly without backup
If you were stored all contacts on the iPhone local device, and you don’t have any backup before the lost case. You can use the third-party application - Fone Rescue to recover contacts from the iPhone device directly. Its advantage is that it can search for lost contacts using normal recovery mode and hex recovery mode.
a). Download and install Fone Rescue on a computer which has installed iTunes
b). Connect your iPhone with the computer, then run Fone Rescue.
c). Select recover from iOS device, it will recognize your iPhone, and click Start Scan button.
d). Once the scan is complete, access Contacts & Messages & Call log tab -> Contact tab. Select and save contacts.
e). If you can’t find the lost contacts, click the Hex Preview button to access the hex recovery mode. All the contact data will be converted to hex data in Hex Preview mode, including deleted contact fragments, you can search any key word to search them. Click Edit with New Window button to view and search keywords in a new editable window.
