We're all worried about data security and privacy, now so more than ever with the amount of hackers around and financial information stored on our computers. But a problem that has plagued the Mac user from day one and is still a more common reason for data loss and breach is simply user or hardware error.
What Can Go Wrong on a Mac
There are many things that can go wrong and cause you to either lose your data completely or expose it to vulnerabilities. For instance, your data can be lost from a broken hard drive, commonly called a computer crash.
You've heard people talk about the nightmares of a hard drive crash before, but you really only get the true sense of loss and helplessness once it happens to you. Imagine waking up and all of your computer information and data is gone. Your work, your writing, your online life, bank statements, financial information, etc.
This can also occur if your partition gets damaged. Any number of things can go wrong inside your Mac and it might not even be your fault. Sure, if you drop Kool-Aid into the tower, you can expect things to go wrong. But what about if you're super careful and one day, a defective fan messes up your entire life? It can happen.
User Error and Data Loss
Even more common than hardware failure is human error, that is, deleting files and then emptying your trash bin without thinking twice. For the most part, this will lose your data forever because as soon as deleted files clear up space on your memory, the memory is back in play for the computer and overwritten.
If the space the file was on is still free, you can recover the lost data with a third party app, but the more you use your Mac, the more likely it is that the space is being overwritten on the hard drive.
What Can You Do to Keep Your Data Secure and Safe
So, aside from being lucky, what can you do to ensure that your data is safe and secure on your Mac?
Always keep your files and software up to date with the latest security patches and versions. This will help keep your computer running in optimal condition to minimize hardware and/or software errors or hacking.
Always be careful before you empty your trash bin. Search through the files and make sure that you want them to be gone forever, because once you hit the button and empty the trash, it's a hassle trying to recover the files...that is, if you can and if they are recovered in a usable state.
Create backups of all your work once a week and after any substantial action has been taken. Did you pay your bills and save the receipts to your bill folder? Back that up. Did you finish that report your boss has been hounding you for? Back it up.
