Ways to Keep Your iCloud Private Data Safe

iCloud privacy has come under a lot of scrutiny lately after the leak of hundreds of nude pictures in the media. Hackers were supposedly able to get into the iCloud via a security vulnerability, steal naked pictures of celebrities and then post them for the world to see.

But what's to stop this from happening to you? You don't want your personal photos, data and life out there for the world to see, even if it is just pictures of you and your dog or your attempt at a novel.

Steps You Can Take to Make Your iCloud Data More Secure

Here are some simple steps that you can take to ensure that your iCloud private data remains just that: private.

Come Up with a Secure Password
Guessing your password isn't as difficult as you might think. People often use birthdays, pet names, etc. All of these are pretty easy to gain access to through public records or through simple phishing scams, and if that fails, password cracking software can do the trick.

Sign in to iCloud.com

So what can you do? Choose a secure password. Remember, the longer the password, the harder it is to crack. Use upper and lowercase letters along with a few symbols, punctuation marks and numbers. Generate random passwords and use a different one for each account or site you have. Change this password every three months or more frequently if you feel compromised.

Set Up Two-Step Verification
Almost all of your major social media, email and bank accounts offer two-step verification. This simply means that after you enter your password, you will receive a verification code (typically through SMS text messaging) which you must then enter to continue your log in.

You have to set this up beforehand, but what it does is gives you another layer of protection for your iCloud. No one will be able to access your iCloud unless they have your password, user name and your mobile phone.

Keep Your Email Secure
If a hacker hacks into your email account, they can change the password on your iCloud account and gain entry that way. Be sure that the email account you have linked to your iCloud is secure and that a secure password is chosen along with two-step verification.

Set a secondary or rescue email account as well, so even if hacked, you can get in and reset the password to stop the damage. It's also a good idea not to click on any suspicious links from your email (this is phishing).

Disable Automatic Uploads
While this feature certainly is handy, it can also increase your risk to exposure since all of your photos are automatically backed up and easily accessible on any of your devices.

Simply turn off the Photo Stream feature on your Settings Menu to keep your pictures solely on your iPhone. You can manually upload or download them wherever you'd like afterward, rather than leaving them in the cloud for hackers to possibly access.
