Do you notice that you can’t edit image name with Get info window after importing images to Mac photos? If the photos contains a title metadata tag, the Mac Photos app displays the title as the filename. Otherwise, it will display the file name(such as IMG_3860.JPG) in Mac Photos application. Besides exporting them to the local Finder and modifying the filenames, is there any way to directly change the images in Mac Photos app?

The answer is YES, the Mac Photos app doesn't provide an option to change the filename, but some third-party apps can help you change it safely.

Photo Exifer application is a photo metadata editor for Mac photo library and local photos. It can edit all photo metadata of photos inside or outside of Mac photos. In addition, it also support finding and deleting duplicate photos from Mac photo library. Here are steps we use Photo Exifer to rename image name in Mac Photos app.

Download and install Photo Exifer application on your Mac, and then add Photo Exifer.app to the Full Disk Access list to get the read and write permission to access Mac photo library.

Run Photo Exifer application, and click Photo Library, it will scan and read all photos in Mac Photos application, and then click the sort options to find photo that you need to change file name.

And then select them in Photo Exifer, and click Quick Action -> Rename photos in Photo library. It supports batch processing and will process all selected photos.

Then select an option to change the filename, use custom text, or use other photo metadata tags. Click Save button to save.

Run the Mac Photos app, select a photo and view the filename in the Get Info window, you will see that the filename has changed.
