How to fix Unable to export photos from Mac Photos?

When you plan to export photos from Mac Photos app to other place, but Photos application fails to export due to the errors “The export operation failed to create a file for the photo identified below”, “The file Photos.sqlite couldn’t be opened”. After restarting the Photos app and exporting without any success. If you have ever experienced the same problem during the use of the Photo application, here we’ll guide you through 4 things to solve it.

1. Repair Photo Library

 

Close the Mac Photos app, then hold down the Options Command and click the Photos icon to reopen the Mac Photos app. Then click Repair to rebuild your photo library in the Repair Library window.

2. Check if Turn on iCloud Photos

 

Go to Mac Photos application main menu Preferences…-> iCloud, do have turn on iCloud Photos? Do you have "Download Originals to this Mac" or "Optimize Mac Storage” checked? Please select "Download Originals to this Mac" option, because "Optimize Mac Storage” option will replace the full-resolution photos and videos with smaller, device-sized versions, when your Mac is running low on storage space.

3. Check if photos is referenced files

 

Go to Mac Photos application main menu Preferences…-> General, have a check if the option “Copy Items to the Photos Library” is selected. If you don’t select the option “Copy Items to the Photos Library”, original photos and videos will not been copied to Mac Photos, they’re referenced files in the photo library. Once the file name and location of original photos and videos are changed in Finder or other place, the referenced files will lost connection in the photo library. You need to find the original photos and videos in Finder or elsewhere.

4. Use third-party app to export

 

If the original photos and videos still can’t export from Mac Photo application, you can consider using third-party application to export. Here we recommend using Photo Exifer application, which is a photo metadata editor for local photos and photo library. And it provides a feature to export photos from Mac photo library with photo metadata. Download and install Photo Exifer application.

Run Photo Exifer application, and then click Photo Library tab, it will read all photos and videos in Mac Photos application, and then select photos you want to export, and click Quick Action -> Export original photos from the Photo Library.
