How to fix when your iPhone battery percentage is incorrect on iOS 10?

There have been numerous reports from owners of the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s Plus, stating that their battery percentage will suddenly drop. At times the battery percentage will drop below 20 percent and jump up again to 80 percent upon small charging. While the majority of these issues appear on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, it seems to have occurred on other iOS devices as well.

Apple uses lithium-ion technology as iPhone battery. Compared with traditional battery technology, lithium-ion batteries charge faster, last longer, and have a higher power density for more battery life in a lighter package. When you know a little about how they work, they can work that much better for you. Apple lithium-ion battery uses fast charging to quickly reach 80% of its capacity, then switches to slower trickle charging. The amount of time it takes to reach that first 80% will vary depending on your settings and which device you’re charging. This combined process not only lets you get out and about sooner, it also extends the lifespan of your battery. We have an article about the principle of the iPhone battery.

To improve battery life, you can turn off the feature that allows apps to refresh in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and set the switch to Off.

If the Mail app lists Background Activity, you can choose to fetch data manually or increase the fetch interval. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data. Location and Background Location. This indicates that the app is using location services.

You can optimize your battery life by turning off Location Services for the app. Turn off in Settings > Privacy > Location Services.

If an app frequently wakes your display with notifications, you can turn off push notifications for the app in Settings > Notifications. Tap App and set Allow Notifications to Off. If these approaches did not help, then try the following guides:

Before you do anything, make sure you don't have any intensive applications running, or any processes in the background that may be harming your battery performance in a significant way. So for the fix. It is possible that there is a software issue— a bug or glitch, and especially since you are running an outdated version of iOS, you may be even more at risk. I would always advise you to upgrade your iPhone to the latest version of iOS— iOS 10.0.2. That will probably solve your issues. It will also give you iOS 10, one of the biggest releases ever, and all its new features. This is probably an issue that will go away once it is charged up or the software is updated.

If upgrading doesn’t work (meaning your iPhone still sees major drops in battery percentage), and you are sure nothing is running in the background that is detrimental to battery life, I would recommend doing a couple of things.

First, I would restart the iPhone by holding down the power and home buttons simultaneously. If that doesn't work, then I would recommend giving it some time by fully charging it and then trying to deplete the battery. In other words, let the iPhone run through a charge cycle: fully charge the iPhone and use the phone throughout the day until the battery reaches 0%. If while using the iPhone you don't see that same issue, great; but I would still let the battery go to empty. Then recharge it to 100% again. Your issue should be fixed somewhere along this process.

If all of those things don't work, I would recommend doing a restore of the iPhone in Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings.

If all else fails, then it would be wise to diagnose your battery through Apple Support. You can call AppleCare or visit Official Apple Support to connect with a specialist who will initiate a remote diagnostic test on your iPhone’s battery (among other things) to see if anything is malfunctioning, and they will provide you with the best options you have for eradicating the issue.
