How to prevent iTunes from overwriting previous iPhone backup

As we know, iTunes keep only one backup for each iOS device on your computer. It will overwrite the previous backup when you make an iTunes backup for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. If we imagine that iTunes can keep multiple backups for your iOS device with timestamp as Time Machine does, we'll be able to choose the backup time to restore the iPhone backup. How does iTunes recognize iOS backups?

Each iTunes backup folder contains the Manifest.db, Manifest.plist and Info.plist. They record all iOS backup information, iTunes read them to recognize iPhone backup. It means that the iPhone backup can copy and paste to different computer and external disk. When you copy a full iPhone backup back to the iTunes backup location on the computer, the iTunes will recognize it.

Here is the iTunes backup location on your computer, and you can't change it in iTunes settings. Each iOS backup folder is named by device UDID, you can check the device UDID in iTunes when connect the computer.

Itunes backup location in Windows 7 and Vista, Windows 8, Windows 10 : C:\Users\~\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

And iTunes backup location in Mac OS X system:~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

iTunes read the all iTunes backup under "Backup" folder, it means that if the backup folder is not under Backup folder, or the "Backup" folder has been renamed, iTunes can not read the backup.

Keep multiple iPhone backup by rename Backup folder

So if you don't want to overwrite the old iTunes backup, you can rename the "Backup" folder by the date like this. And When you need to restore it, you can change the name back. iTunes still recognize it.
