Usually the file size of most photos is 2~10MB, when we need to send 6~10 photos as attachments in Apple Mail, it may reach or exceed the attachment limit of 25MB and cannot send out. How to reduce a photo to a small size on Mac? In this article, we will show you how to reduce file size of photo in Mac Photos and in Finder.
There are two common ways to reduce the file size of a photo. One is to reduce the size by changing the pixel size of the photo, and the other is to compress the photo without losing any pixels by reducing the file size of the photo. Here are the detailed steps.
1. Reduce file size of photo in Mac Photos
To reduce file size of photo in Mac Photos application, we need to use the export feature. Select one more photos in Mac Photos app, and then go to File menu -> Export -> Export 1 photo…, click the expand button in the Photo Kind, and then select “Low (smallest size)” option in the JPEG Quality, select “Small” (320x240), “Medium” (640x480), “Large” (1280X960) option in the Size. Click the "Export" button to export the selected photos, and the exported photos will be resized.
2. Reduce file size of photo in Finder
If your photo is stored in the Finder, double-click to open it using the Preview application. And then go to File menu -> Tools -> Adjust Size. If you need to resize proportionally, enter a smaller width or height of the photo and it will adjust automatically. Or you can deselect “Scale Proportionally” and change the width and height to a custom size. Click the “OK” button to save.
3. Reduce file size of photo using lossless compression
The above method is to reduce the file size by reducing the photo width and height. If we don’t want to reduce file size of photo without lost any photo width and height, we need to use the photo lossless compression tech. Here we recommend using PhotoPress application, which is a free photo compression application, and it provides the lossless compression and resize feature to reduce file size. Download and install PhotoPress app on your Mac.
Run PhotoPress app, and then drag and drop photos into PhotoPress, it will automatically reduce the file size of the photos losslessly.
If you need to custom the width and height of a photo, go to File menu -> Resize Photos…, and it will pop-up a window to resize photo with or without “Scale Proportionally”.
