What Photo format does macOS Big Sur support?

With the iterative upgrade of various digital cameras and smart phones, new photo and video formats will continue to appear. For example, HEIC and HEVC of iPhone, RAW CR3 files of Canon EOS full-frame digital camera, etc. We don't know whether our current computer OS can support opening and editing these photo file formats. This article will discuss which photo formats are supported on macOS Big Sur.

Some basic image file formats, such as JPG, JPEG, PNG, TIFF/TIF, GIF, BMP, ICNS, ICO, can be supported by Mac, even lower versions of macOS. You can view them in the Finder and open them by macOS built-in Preview application. Some special image file formats, such as PSD, AI, Sketch, PSB, etc. need to install some corresponding image editing software(Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Sketch, Lightroom) to open and edit.

Some camera raw file formats contain unprocessed data from the digital camera sensor. Most camera manufacturers save image data in a proprietary camera format. For example, Canon’s original photo format is CR2, CRW, CR3, Nikon’s original photo format is NEF, and Sony’s original photo format is ARW,SRF and more. We can see that even with different camera models of the same brand, it may use different raw photo formats.

Therefore, macOS supports various camera models to support digital camera RAW formats. If you are not sure whether your digital camera is supported by macOS, and these common raw photo formats including Adobe .DNG, Canon CR2, CRW, Fuji RAF, Kodak DCR, Minolta MRW, Nikon NEF, Olympus ORF, Pentax PEF, Sony SRF can be supported by macOS. And here is an Apple document which lists the camera models supported by macOS Big Sur. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211241

In general, if you can't open some picture formats on macOS, you need to find out what camera or software created this picture format. Then find the relevant picture editing software or use a third-party picture browsing software, such as XnView MP.
