How to find and change recording date of voice memo?

Some iPhone and Mac users reported that they are unable to view and find the recording date of the voice memo file after transferring to an external hard drive. The creation date of the transferred voice memo has been changed to the transfer date instead of the recording date. How to view the recording date of voice memos? If the recording date of voice memos is exist and correct, how to change the creation date of voice memo to the recording date? Let's figure these things out.

 

How to view the recording date of voice memos?

 

The audio metadata contains the recording date of the voice memo, even if it is copied, transferred to another place. Here we use Media Meta application to view the recording date of voice memos, which is an audio and video metadata editor application, download and install Media Meta app on your Mac. And then import the voice memos into Media Meta, it will display the recording date of voice memo.

If the creation date of voice memo is different from the recording date, Media Meta app also provides the feature to copy the recording date to the creation date. Select one or more voice memo files in Media Meta, and click Quick Action -> Copy Shooting/Recording date to Creation date, it will work.

How to change the recording date of voice memos?

 

If the voice memo does not contain a recording date, how to add or change the recording date of the voice memo? By default, voice memo files are m4a audio files that are stored under ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.voicememos/Recordings/#######.m4a. They are named by the recording date and time. You can open Finder Menu -> Go -> Go to Folder… -> ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.voicememos/Recordings, you'll see that all your voice memo files are in Finder. Change recording date of voice memo using file name

Copy the Recordings folder which contains all the original voice memos to another folder. And then import them into Media Meta application, select voice memos and click Quick Action -> Set Shooting/Recording date from filename, it will work.

If the voice memo has been renamed without any recording date, you can still add and change the recording date of voice memos in Media Meta app. Select a voice memo, and change the value of Create Date and Recording Date, then click the Save Changes at the top of the window. It will work.
