How to fix Mac Boot slowly after macOS update?

Recently, we received some requests for help after installing macOS updates on Mac, and their iMac started slowly to reach the account login window. For some Mac users, it takes some time to see Mac desktop files after logging in to the current user's account and password. How to speed up the startup process? It seems that loading some unknown resources during startup takes too much time. In this article, we will solve it.

1. Clean up Startup items

Each Mac has some startup items that start with the boot process, some are built-in macOS, and some are third-party applications. They may be applications or background services. Open System Preferences, choose Users & Groups -> Login Items, the startup items are listed in the right table view. Select the application that you want to remove, Click "-" button.

But they’re not all startup items, there are some launchd agent and launchd daemon, we use the third-party disk application - PowerSuite to find and remove them.

2. Remove Mac cache files

When macOS loads the file system, the file system retrieves some files on the startup disk. If there are a large number of cache files on the startup disk, it will slow down the retrieval speed, and then slow down the macOS boot speed. Each running app will create some cache files, and macOS stores these cache files in the folder ~/Library/Caches. Some of these cached files come from macOS system applications, while others come from third-party applications.

If you don’t know how to delete those files and folder, you can remove those cache files with PowerSuite .

3. Repair the Startup volume

For hard disk boots, the master boot record (MBR) is loaded into RAM and executed. In most cases, the MBR holds code that loads the boot sector of the active partition, which then contains actual OS loader code. If there is a error in MBR or the boot sector of the active partition due to wrong disk write or other reasons, the macOS boot process will take up a long time to try to solve it, or the macOS boot process may fail to load.

Run Disk Utility(/Applications/Utilities), select the startup volume on the left, and click First Aid, click Run to start the repair process.
