Many Mac users have reported that Microsoft Word becomes slow and sluggish, particularly when scrolling through documents, after updating to the latest version. If restarting the application and the computer doesn't resolve the issue, here are some solutions you can try that should be able to improve the performance of Microsoft Word on your Mac.
1. Check Your Mac's Memory and CPU Usage
Open the Activity Monitor application (located in /Applications/Utilities) to see if any applications or processes are consuming excessive memory or CPU resources. If you find such processes, force quit them and then try running Microsoft Word again.
2. Turn Off the Spell Check Feature in Microsoft Word
The issue may be related to the Spell Check feature, which can cause Word to freeze. Have a try to disable the Spell Check feature in Microsoft Word Settings. Open Word and go to Word -> Preferences or Settings -> go to Spelling & Grammar -> Unselect the option "Check Spelling as you type" in the Spelling tab.
3. Install an Earlier Version of Microsoft 365/Word for Mac
If the problem started after updating to the latest version, try reverting to an earlier version of Microsoft 365/Word for Mac. Remove the current Office suite or the individual Word application from your Mac. Download and install an earlier version from the Microsoft update history page(https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac).
4. Use the Web Version of Microsoft 365
While waiting for the next update that may fix the issue, consider using the web version of Microsoft 365. This allows you to open and edit documents without the performance issues found in the desktop version.
5. Use the Apple Pages App
As an alternative, you can use Apple's Pages application to open and edit your documents. After editing, you can export the documents in Word format if needed.
