Have you ever exported original photos from the Photos application? Have you noticed that some Xmp files appear in the destination location. What’s this? What can these files be used for?
In the export window, there is an option: "Export IPTC as XMP" option, if the checkbox is checked, it will store some photo IPTC metadata tags in the xmp file, including photo title, photo description, photo shooting date, keywords, GPS location information. So we can read and view some photo metadata tags from the xmp file.
If you ever made changes for photo metadata tags in the Photos application, the photo metadata of the exported original photos will be different from the metadata in the photo library. And these changed photo metadata tags are stored in xmp files.
Although the Photo application created these xmp files, we cannot use the Photo application to open the Xmp files to view and edit these metadata tags, or write the Xmp files to the corresponding photos. These will be the problems to be solved in this article.
Use Xmp Editor to Edit and Write Xmp file
Search Xmp Editor in Mac AppStore, then download and install it, it is an Xmp file editor application that supports viewing, editing and writing photo metadata in Xmp files, as well as batch writing photo metadata from xmp files to corresponding photos. Run Xmp Editor, open or drag a xmp file to view.
And then you can add, edit photo title, photo description, photo taken time, keywords, GPS exif longitude, GPS Exif latitude, and then write it to some photos or xmp files.
Click the Write Xmp file to Photos on the left window, and open the xmp folder which contains xmp file and photos, it will automatically batch write the photo metadata in the xmp file to the corresponding photos.
