When we turn on iCloud Drive on the Mac, and then store some files and folders in the document and desktop location, they will be uploaded to iCloud instead of being stored on the local disk. Unless we turn off the "iCloud desktop and document folder" option in Cloud Drive.
Sometimes we need to sign out Apple ID and close the iCloud Drive on the Mac, and all data in the documents and desktop folders will be deleted from the Mac. This is why many users report that their documents and desktop data disappeared after turning off the iCloud drive. If we don't want to lose them, how to retrieve and restore these lost documents and desktop data?
When we turn off the iCloud Drive, there will be a pop up window with three options: Keep a Copy, Cancel and Remove From Mac. If you choose “Keep a Copy” option, all iCloud Drive data will be archived and stored in home folder path before removing from the Mac. Open Finder and go to Folder... /Users/yourname, you will find it.
But if you choose “Remove From Mac” option, all iCloud Drive data w ill be removed from the Mac without any copy. How to recover them?
If those document and desktop data has been synced and uploaded to iCloud, you can visit www.icloud.com with your Apple ID and password. Tap the iCloud Drive, you will find the Desktop and Document folders there, then double click the Desktop or Document to access, select files and folders to download.
If you still cannot find files and folders from the iCloud desktop and document folders, it may be that the data was not uploaded to the iCloud server before closing the iCloud drive. You need to recover them from the temporary storage location on the disk. All iCloud Drive data is stored in the temporary storage location on the disk when downloading and uploading from iCloud: ~/Library/Mobile Document or ~/Library/iCloud Drive. We use Fireebok Data Recovery to recover them, download and install Fireebok Data Recovery on Mac.
