Some customers contact us that they often got a dialog box that “#### will damage your computer, You should move it to the Bin (Trash)” in new macOS Catalina. But after moving it to the Trash or Move to bin, there is nothing in the Trash folder. How to remove the item from a Mac? The #### may be a malware name, which can be an application, a helper process, a setting file, an AppleScript, a browser extension, here we provide some solutions to delete it.
1. Search the malware name in Finder
Search for the malware name in Finder in the current system volume - Macintosh, check the app and folder that match the name, then move them to the Trash. If you can’t remove them in Finder for some reason, please see the solution 6.
2. Check the running process in Activity Monitor
Check the running process that match the malware name. Open Activity Monitor and search the malware name. If you can view a running process that match the name, it means that the malware is an executable program. Please quit it and then see the solution 2 and solution 3 to remove.
3. Check macOS Startup items
If this prompt appears every time you start your computer, which means that the malware name is a startup item. The easiest way is to remove it from the computer startup list. Here we use PowerSuite - Startup Boost feature to view and manage all macOS startup items. Download and install PowerSuite on the Mac.
Run PowerSuite application, and click Startup Boost tab to display startup items, view and find the startup item name and location which match the malware name. then disable the state and click Apply Changes.
4. Check installed Applications
Another possibility is that the adware comes from the installed app itself or its associated executable app. Therefore, completely removing and uninstalling an application containing malware content would be a good solution.
Run PowerSuite application, and click App Uninstaller tab to scan all applications and view installed application and its associated items, then sort by Last launch date(Date: Newest to Oldest), then find the application content which match the malware name. Then select the application on the left and remove.
5. Check the installed browser extensions
Open Safari browser, go to Safari menu Preference -> Extensions … View all installed extension items. Select the extension that match the malware name, click “Uninstall”.
6. If you can’t remove item in Finder or Trash
Sometime we can’t remove items in Finder or Trash because of file permission or other reasons. Here we recommend Better Trash - it can help us to force delete some items in macOS.
Can’t remove item in Finder — Run Better Trash -> choose Secure Delete menu item, choose that item in Finder to remove.
Can’t remove item in Trash — Run Better Trash -> choose Force Empty Trash menu item, it will empty all items from the Trash folder.
