How do you rename photos on Mac? After updating iPhoto to the “Photos” app on your Mac, we cannot rename the photos in the new “Photos” like in the iPhoto app. Before importing to the "Photos" application, we need to rename photos in Finder, but the Finder rename function can only add text and replace text. Sometimes we need to batch rename all camera photos with the shooting date and time, because the date and time stamp are necessary for us to better use and manage them.
The shooting date and time stamp are recorded in the exif data when it was taken, considering that the local creation date and modification date of the photo may be modified, the shooting time may be different from them. We can view the exif date of the photo using the preview application, go to the menu -> Tools -> select Show Inspector -> select Exif, you will view the Digitized and Original date.
We recommend using Photo Exifer to batch rename photos with shooting date and time on Mac. It is easy to complete the renaming and only requires two steps. After download and install Photo Exifer on the Mac, run Photo Exifer.
1. Import photos into Photo Exifer, and select photos in Photo Exifer, click Quick Action -> select the "Rename using metadata tag(s)" menu item
2. Select “Camera date” in “Insert photo metadata tag(s)”, and unselect “Keep existing file name text”, and click the "Save" button.
The renamed photo will appear in the Finder
