Have you ever encountered a situation where you cannot empty a folder in the Trash on your Mac because you lack the necessary permissions to delete it? If so, you are not alone. 1. Quit Related Applications
First, open the Activity Monitor application located in /Applications/Utilities/. Use this application to quit any related applications that might be using the file or folder. Once you have quit these applications, try deleting the file or folder again.
2. Move to a New Folder
Create a new folder on your desktop. Then, drag and drop the folder you want to delete from the Trash into this new folder. Finally, delete the newly created folder by pressing the option-command-delete keys simultaneously.
3. Delete in Safe Mode
To access Safe Mode, follow these steps:
a). For Intel-based Macs: Start up your Mac or restart it, and immediately press and hold the Shift key until the login window appears. Log in to your Mac, and you should see "Safe Boot" in the menu bar. Once in Safe Mode, try deleting the file or folder from the Trash again.
b). For Apple silicon-based Macs: Shut down your Mac, then press and hold the power button until the "Loading startup options" screen appears. Select a volume and press and hold the Shift key. Click "Continue in Safe Mode" and log in to your Mac. You should see "Safe Boot" in the menu bar. Now, attempt to delete the file or folder from the Trash.
4. Use Better Trash
Better Trash is a third-party application that can help you force empty the Trash, view the original path of the items in the Trash, and automatically empty the Trash using custom rules. Download and install Better Trash on your Mac.
Better Trash is a menu bar application, when you run Better Trash application, you will find the application icon in the menu bar after running the application. Click the application icon and choose the "Force Empty Trash" menu item.
A pop-up window will appear. Click the "Empty Trash" button in this window to remove the files or folders.
