Today my Mac prompted that there is an update available for Mac. When I visited System Preferences -> Software Update, I noticed that the Mac can be updated to the latest macOS Catalina 10.15.6. However, when I click "Update Now" to update the Mac, and then click the "Restart" button, but the Mac restarts without updating. When I tried to find the answer, I found that there are still many mac users like me who have encountered the same problem, but fortunately, I have found some ways to solve this problem. This article will share these solutions.
1. Free up storage from the startup disk
In fact, macOS upgrade requires sufficient free space on the system disk. After downloading the macOS Catalina 10.15.6 update, the startup disk needs at least 13.96 GB of storage space to load and install. Click About This Mac from the Apple () menu -> Storage, to view the free space of the startup disk.
If the free storage the startup disk is less than 15GB, please click “Manage…” button to delete some unnecessary files and applications from the Mac.
If you still run out of space after deleting some files, or you feel helpless about it, I recommend using the third-party application- PowerSuit which will help you to free up Mac storage by deleting application caches, logs, large files and duplicate files and more.
2. Update macOS in the Safe mode
If you have enough free storage of startup disk, you still can’t update to macOS Catalina 10.15.6, please access the System Preferences -> Software Update in the Mac Safe mode. How to access the Mac Safe Mode: Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. Release the Shift key when you see the login window. Then your computer doesn’t need to hold any keys/buttons during startup.
3. Download and install the update package directly
Most macOS updates provide users with a separate update installation package to install and update. Here is the download link of macOS Catalina 10.15.6 Combo Update from Apple, and you can download this update package(.dmg) and open it to install manually. https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2048?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Note: the macOS Catalina 10.15.6 Combo Update has the system requirements: macOS 10.15, you can’t update from macOS Mojave or lower to macOS Catalina 10.15.6 with this update package.
