When we installed new apps on my Mac, some apps will change the default opening of some file extensions. For example, a photo application will open almost all image format files by default, instead of using the Preview application to open by default, and a video application will open almost all video format files by default, instead of using the Quick Player application to open by default. How to fix it? Don’t worry, in this article, we'll solve how to change back to the default open application, and how to choose a specific application as the default open application for a specific file format.
Change the default opening app for a file extension
Select the file in Finder, and then right click the file, and choose Open With -> Other... -> then select the checkbox ”Always Open With”, and select an application that you want to open in Applications. Then all files with this extension will then be opened with the currently selected application.
Or select the file in Finder, then right click the file, and select Get Info, find the Open with: tab in the file info window, select the drop-down box under the Open with: tab, select a recommended application or click Other... option, then select an application that you want to open in Applications.
Detect and change the default opening app for multiple file extensions
The above method is suitable for changing a file suffix, but in fact those applications change a lot of file suffixes, also, we don't know which file extensions have their default opening method changed. Here we recommend using PowerSuite application -Open With feature, it detects all installed Mac applications and the file extensions they open by default, and it supports batch changing the default opening method of multiple file suffixes to a specific application. Download and install the latest version of PowerSuite on your Mac.
Run PowerSuite app and click Utilities & Tools -> Open With feature.
It will list all applications and the file extensions they open by default.
Find the file extension you want to make change, click the Edit button, and then select the file extension, and click the “Open with another application” button to select an application to open.
