Some Mac users have reported that when they download or move photos and videos from shared albums, the photos and videos treat the download date as the same creation date, preventing them from being sorted properly. Is there a way to keep the original date of photos and videos after downloading or moving a shared album? Yes, there is, and this article provides a solution to preserve the date and location of photos when you download them from a shared album.
When you move or download photos from a shared album, new files are created instead of the original photos and videos being saved. Therefore, these photos and videos use the download date as the file creation date. The date a photo was taken is stored in the photo's metadata, which includes the photo's location and other photo metadata.
If the photos and videos downloaded from a shared album have a photo Exif date, we simply copy and paste the Exif date into the creation date. If not, we will need to add the date the photo was taken and the date it was created to these photos and videos.
Preserve the date and location of photos
To complete the above photo metadata changes, you can view and edit the photo Exif date using the Photo Exifer app, a photo metadata editing application. Download and install the Photo Exifer application on your Mac, and then import photos or photo folders into Photo Exifer.
Import photos into the Photo Exifer application, click on the photo to view the photo's Exif date and other photo metadata. For photos that have “Date Time Original” and “Date Time Digitized” under Exif Properties, select photos and click Quick Action -> Copy Camera Date to Created Date. This will change the creation date of the photos to the photo's Exif date.
For photos that do not have a photo Exif date, select photos and click the Edit Exif data button, then add the camera date or photo location information and click the Apply button. Or select photos and click Quick Action -> Edit Date Info button to batch change the date with more options.
