Click About this Mac from the Apple Menu in the corner of your Mac screen, and then click Storage -> Manage… button, you will see that macOS defines the disk storage space as some storage categories, such as Applications, Books, Documents, Mails, iCloud Drive, Photos, and other Users, System Data, etc. However, some Mac user reported that System data takes up too much storage space on their Macs after updating to macOS Monterey.
What’s System Data? It contains macOS system applications and files. Examples include Safari data, Mail data, Terminal, Calculator, and Time Machine Local Snapshots. How to release and reduce those system data?
1. Free up Mac Storage
We can delete files and folders that are no longer needed at any time. After moving these items to the Trash, these items will not be deleted until you empty the Trash, and they will still take up space. So we need to empty the Trash. Or manually delete unneeded files, such as unnecessary applications, music, videos and other media can free up lots of storage space.
If you have completed the above steps, but the system data is still not reduced. Have a try to remove system cache data, log data and other junk files with PowerSuite, which is a third-party disk utility application, and it supports the latest macOS Monterey. Download and install PowerSuite , click the Start Scan in the Clean Up tab. It will quickly display the cache data, log data, web data, Trash data, failed download files and iService Data, and then you can select them to remove.
2. Move Photo Library to external hard drive
Connect an external storage device on your Mac, and then move Photo Library, iTunes Library, videos and other media to that device, it will save a lots of storage space.
On the other hand, I learned from some Apple support documents, to check your free up storage space, rely on the amount of storage space shown as “available” in About This Mac or at the top of the storage-management window pictured above. Other measurements, including measurements in other tools, might calculate storage space differently or show storage categories such as Other, Purgeable, Free, Other Volumes, Not Mounted, VM, Recovery, or System Data. Don't rely on those measurements to understand how much space is available for your data, or how to make more space available.
This means that if you have enough available storage space, you can ignore the system data.
