How to Save Mac Photo Library photos to external drive keeping original creation date?

When we plan to repair or sell our Mac, we usually back up our photo library photos ahead of time and save them to an external drive. In fact, open the Photos app and select All Photos -> File Menu -> Export -> Export Unmodified Originals of Selected Photos, then select an external drive location to save, the creation date of the exported photos will be changed to the current export date, not the original creation date. How to save Mac Photo Library photos to an external drive and keep the original creation date?

When you export a photo to an external drive, the file system will use the new file creation date as the exported photo, not the exif capture date in the photo. In order to keep the original creation date of the exported photo, we need to change the creation date with exif date using an 3rd party application. Here we recommend using Photo Exifer, which is a photo metadata editor for Mac photos. It offers the ability to easily export photos to an external drive and keep the original creation date.

Download and install Photo Exifer application on your Mac.

Run Photo Exifer application, click Photo Library tab, it will scan and read all photos in Photo library, and select all photos, click Quick Action -> Export original photos from Photo Library, or Export original photos from Photo Library by year and month.
