When we transfer and download some video files on the Mac, but they can’t be opened. Which video file format can be opened on Mac? macOS uses the QuickTime player to open the video format by default, and the QuickTime player only supports certain audio and video formats. Such as QuickTime movie files (.mov), most MPEG files (.mp4, .m4v, .m4a, .mp3, .mpg), some AVI and WAV files. In this article, we will summarize which video format files the macOS supports, and how to deal with and open macOS incompatible video format files.
How to open a video format which can’t support on Mac?
If the QuickTime player does not support opening this video format, we can choose to use iMovie to open it, which can support more video formats. iMovie supports the video file format: Apple Animation Codec, Apple Intermediate Codec, Apple ProRes, AVCHD (including AVCCAM, AVCHD Lite, and NXCAM), DV (including DVCAM, DVCPRO, and DVCPRO50), H.264, HDV, HEVC, iFrame, Motion JPEG (OpenDML only), MPEG-4 SP, Photo JPEG, XAVC-S. And iMovie supports the audio file format: AAC, AIFF, BWF, CAF, MP3, MP4, RF64, WAV.
QuickTime Player and iMovie still cannot open some video formats, we can convert them to compatible media formats. To convert an incompatible media file, open it with QuickTime Player (version 10.0 and later) in macOS Mojave or earlier. Or use Apple Compressor or Final Cut Pro to convert and transcode to H.264, HEVC or Apple ProRes video format in macOS Catalina or later.
How to edit and delete movie metadata?
When we choose to convert and transcode to other video formats, the video metadata will be lost. How to add video metadata to the converted video?Or after we download and transfer the video to Mac, how to completely delete metadata, such as copyright, author, etc., from Mp4 and Mov video files?
We recommend using Media Meta application, which is a video and audio metadata editor. Download and install Media Meta on your Mac.
Run Media Meta and import your video files, and edit the video metadata tags, such as Title, Artist, Copyright and more, and click Save Changes button.
If you need to remove video metadata, select video in Media Meta, and click Quick Action -> Remove metadata of selected medias or Remove metadata of all medias. It supports batch processing.
