We use Photos for Mac to organize all original photos and cameras in digital cameras and smartphone devices. When we needed to export the original photos to Finder, some Apple users reported that some photo metadata(such as description, keyword, etc.) tags of the exported photos would disappear.
If you are using Photos 5 for Mac on macOS Catalina, we know some related information from Apple's official documentation.
For photos from digital cameras or iPhone devices, Photos 5 for Mac can export all IPTC metadata (titles, description, keywords, etc)
For photos from scanned photos and added IPTC metadata, the exported photos will not retain these metadata.
In addition, not all digital camera models can be supported on macOS. If your digital camera is not compatible for the current macOS version, some photo metadata may not be compatible for Mac photos. You can find all third-party cameras supported by macOS Catalina here. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210191
How to fix photo metadata tags disappear after exporting from Photos?
Of course, there are some other reasons that can cause the exported photos to lose metadata. But they’re not important if we can fix this issue. Here we use Photo Exifer to re-add these missing metadata tags to the photos in batches.
1. Download and install Photo Exifer on your Mac
2. Run Photo Exifer and import those photos into Photo Exifer.
3. Select photos in the left window of Photo Exifer, and then click Edit Exif data.
4. Add the artist, description, copyright, keyword, etc IPTC metadata and other photo metadata, the click Apply button.
Photo Exifer do not overwrit your orignial photos, the changed photos will be saved in another location. By default, the location is ~/Pictures/com.Fireebok.viewexifforios
